Going beyond the commercial

We are lawyers who come from a diverse range of backgrounds and experience. We live and work in different parts of Africa and on different continents across the globe. Our understanding of the continent of Africa and the sensibilities of its peoples goes beyond the purely commercial.

Africa consists of a patchwork of disparate economies. We advise our clients on its many different business customs, helping them to reconcile these with their global operations. Our track record is well established and deeply embedded.

Understanding Africa

Africa is the world’s fastest-growing region for foreign direct investment. It recorded a 65 per cent increase in capital investment in 2014, compared to the previous year. The number of FDI projects grew by six per cent. Global businesses are increasing their inbound activity throughout Africa. Morocco’s abundant natural resources, South Africa’s thriving renewable energy market, and Tanzania’s large offshore natural gas fields typify the diverse sectors attracting significant foreign direct investment.

Knowing markets intimately can mean the difference between identifying the services that an investor will need to develop to run a business and being caught out at a critical stage in the investment lifecycle or falling foul of strict regulatory conditions. Investors will need to identify jurisdictions with abundant natural resources, critical for the development of the energy, infrastructure or commodities sectors, and inform themselves about shifts in government policy.

Supporting our clients

We have worked side by side with our clients in Africa as the continent has experienced significant change: we were there to assist in the development of Africa’s first wind turbine project; we were involved in the high-risk project to extract methane from Lake Kivuwatt to be processed for power generation; and as the continent was faced with the worst outbreak of Ebola since the discovery of the disease in 1976, we were there to assist our clients in facing the challenges posed by the outbreak.

Africa’s trade volumes with global partners – including Australia, Canada, China, India, Russia and the United States – have doubled in value over the past decade. Our global presence enables us to manage transactions across these developing axes of growth. And as African companies have expanded across the continent and further outwards, our lawyers around the world have been there to meet their needs.
